Honda “envious” of Nissan’s Qashqai, ponders rival

q00 379x300 Honda envious of Nissans Qashqai, ponders rival

Honda hasn’t been profitable in Europe since 2007, and would like to break the two-percent market-share barrier in the EU and Russia. To do that, it is looking at a rival to Nissan’s Qashqai. Nissan’s compact CUV alone outsold the entire Honda lineup in Europe in the first nine months of this year, and by no small margin: 153,079 to 105,918.

Those kinds of numbers have Honda justifiably envious of Nissan’s little crossover, as apparently offering theCR-V in Europe hasn’t generated the same sort of consumer response. Even so Honda’s CEO, Takanobu Ito, will say nothing more than that “we are thinking about doing something like that” – a decision could still be a ways off, to say nothing of an actual production vehicle.

Nissan also has city cars like the Pixo and Micra spreading the gospel in the A-segment, and it’s likely turning some of those drivers into Qashqai graduates. Likely with that in mind, the company head said they are also considering expanding the Jazz/Fit line, but a true A-segment fighter looks a long way off, with Ito saying, “maybe there will come a time when we will consider A-segment cars for Europe.” Read more…

Honda says 2012 Civic inventory is “virtually zero” due to natural disasters

07 2012 honda civic 450x300 Honda says 2012 Civic inventory is virtually zero due to natural disastersHonda would love nothing more than to sell a boatload of Civic sedans and coupes. Problem is, there just aren’t enough of them to go around. Speaking to Inside Line, Chuck Schifsky, an American Honda Motor Co. spokesman, said:

“Civic sales are down for one simple reason: Low dealer inventory as a result of a shortage of small parts caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake earlier this year, which nearly halted production of the 2012 Civic… This is a supply problem, not a demand problem. There just aren’t any Civics on dealer lots.”

Not only did the earthquake and tsunami in Japan cause production problems, the current flooding in Thailand “will cause another delay in production,” says Schifsky. In other words, if you’re in the market for a new Civic, you’ll likely find yourself waiting for a while.

It’s also worth mentioning that we’ve heard reports that public response to the 2012 Civic has not been the resounding success Honda had hoped for, leading to the possibility that a refresh of the compact will come sooner rather than later. Read more…

2012 Honda Civic launches in five flavors

2012 honda civic630opt 450x275 2012 Honda Civic launches in five flavors

That’s right, this is the 2012 Honda Civic in all its glory. Though it might be difficult to tell with just a casual glance, this Civic is brand-new, sharing practically nothing but its moniker with the previous generation. As much as we may have liked some additional visual flair, it seems Honda is being conservative and aiming right for the heart of the market with five separate and distinct flavors of its compact offering.

We’ll start with the all-new HF model, which, as you may have guessed, is the most fuel efficient of the non-hybridized Civics that will be available in the United States. Honda expects the HF, with its 1.8-liter i-VTEC engine, to earn EPA-estimated fuel economy of 41 miles per gallon on the highway. The HF will share its aerodynamics package with the returing Civic Hybrid, which manages a combined rating of 45 mpg (a four-mpg improvement over the outgoing Civic Hybrid) thanks to its lithium-ion battery – a Honda-first – and 1.5-liter i-VTEC engine and CVT transmission. There’s also a natural gas-powered Civic GX. Read more…

LA 2010: Honda debuts Fit EV concept, production version coming in 2012

We were a bit miffed at the Paris Motor Show this year when Honda debuted its Fit Jazz Hybrid and told us there were no plans to bring it to the United States. Bigger plans were in the works, however, and we’ve now caught our first glimpse at the Fit EV concept on display at this year’s LA Auto Show.

Visually, the Fit EV doesn’t stray too far from the design language we’ve come to know from the gasoline-powered hatchback, albeit with a few concept-y touches thrown in for good measure. Interior refinement is standard-grade Fit spec, as well, with a modified gauge cluster showing battery and efficiency information.

Honda has outfitted the Fit EV with a version of the electric motor used in the automaker’s FCX Clarity fuel cell vehicle, and we’re told that range will be around 100 miles with a top speed of 90 miles per hour. Sounds like a Nissan Leaf competitor to us. Though purely a concept right now, Honda plans to sell a production version of the Fit EV sometime in 2012, and fleet testing of the electric hatch will commence in the coming months.
