BMW, Audi and Mercedes Become Expensive

After declaring the budget 2011 by Mr Pranab Mukherjee, all small to well – establish auto makers in India were felt big relief because there were no major changes in their rates of excise duties.

But, this budget made a minor clause that has already proved quite expensive for car manufacturers which are selling CKD units in the wide Indian vehicle market.

Auto manufacturers such as Mercedes Benz E class and C class, Audi Q5, A4 and a6, BMW 3 Series and 5 – Series are specially imported as the part of CKD. Hence, all these makers enjoy minimum rates of import duties than other manufacturers that are imported as the part of CBU’S.

Generally, all leading makers of cars were exclusively importing range of readymade engines according to the respective vehicles. But, still this engine import was the part of CKD unit. As per the clause which was included in the 2011 budget, the exact definition of ‘CKD vehicle’ includes all possible types of two – wheelers.

2011 Audi Cars

Audi will join the market in 2011 with the below cars:

Audi A3

The Audi A3 gets to take a one-year cooldown lap, meating the changes for 2011 are minimal. Fun and functional urban transportation, Audi’s front-drive 5-door 5-passenger hatchback starts nicely with standard leather and Bluetooth availability for under $30,000. For 2011 A3 power, Audi again brings two 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engines to the party, the first runs on gasoline and offers a frisky turbocharged 200 bhp, while the other delivers award-winning “clean” diesel power and boasts 30 mpg in the city and 42 mpg on the open road.

Audi A4/S4

For 2011, the A4 Quattro sedan dan wagon come to the battle with an available 8-speed Tipronic automatic transmission to enhance both acceleration and gas mileage. The A4’s only engine is a potent 2.0-liter turbocharged four. In front-drive guise, the A4 sedan enjoys a fuel-mixer CVT transmission. New last year, the 333-bhp S4 sedan, the performance jewel in the A4 crown, has been winning just about every comparison test it enters in print online.

Audi A5/S5 Cabrio

Audi A5/S5 family is still a standout collection of coupes and convertibles. The reasons are simple, they look like heaven, feel like luxury and handle impressively with standard Quattro all-wheel drive. The V-6 is dropped from the A5 line for 2011, but the remaining engine a 211-bhp 2.0-liter turbo 4-cylinder, offers 259 lb.-ft. of accelerative torque and helps keep the price down. The big-gun S5 models carry over with a 354-bhp V-8 in the coupe and 333-bhp supercharged V-6 in the Cabriolet.

2011 Audi A8

2011 audi a8 review 03 opt 450x300 2011 Audi A8

I have to admit losing track of how many times my hapless copilot uttered this – and countless other unpublishable phrases – from the passenger seat during our drive. But if I’m being honest, it doesn’t hold a candle to the endless string of explicatives running through my own mind.

The reason? I’m piloting a 2011 Audi A8 through a particularly tortuous stretch of California tarmac running between the Monterey Valley and the Pacific Coast, and for the better part of 20 miles, the driver of the tunedBMW 335i in the lead hasn’t seen anything other than the A8′s massive slatted grille in his rearview mirror. Just as impressive – if not more so – is the pair of worked-over E36 M3s that are having a hard time keeping up. And these guys are locals. They’ve been running this road for over a decade, only to have me show and spoil their ragtag rally in Audi’s latest luxo-bruiser. Read more…

2012 Audi A6

2012 audi a6 review 01 opt 450x298 2012 Audi A6

Audi is on a roll. Need proof? Who doesn’t overtly or secretly lust after an R8 Spyder? Would any of us kick anything with an RS badge out of our garage? Didn’t think so. Audi’s sales are growing because of its products. The German automaker recently broke the 100,000 unit sales mark in the States, with 2010 calendar year sales up 23 percent over 2009. The all-new 2012 Audi A6 – due in U.S. showrooms in September – continues the manufacturer’s aggressive product expansion and portfolio revitalization plan. Now we want to know if it’s good enough to bring even more buyers into the Audi family. Read more…

Don’t Call It S1: Audi shows off 185-hp A1 ahead of Paris debut

As if we needed another reason to salivate over the delicious little Audi A1. The Four Ring’d One has just announced that it will pull the sheets off of a new, hopped-up version of its tiniest hatch at this year’s Paris Motor Show. Here’s the important part: under the hood, there’s a 185-horsepower dual-charged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine with 185 lb-ft of torque. That’s right, this machine makes use of both a supercharger and a turbocharger, and as a result, Audi says that its new A1 1.4 TFSI can scoot to 60 mph in a quick 6.9 seconds.

By way of salting the wound even further, Audi says that the meanest of the A1 breed returns around 40 mpg U.S., effectively making the Honda CR-Z look both lethargic and overtly wasteful. A seven-speed DSG gearbox handles shifting duties and likely helps with that massive fuel economy number. Quattro all-wheel drive is still not available, however.

2011 Audi A8 available with factory-installed wireless internet hotspot

One day, we’ll be able to have wireless internet access from nearly every point on the globe. And while many cities and towns are making efforts to offer free wireless service across a broad range, automakers are now looking to bring WiFi connectivity to cars. Audi is on board, and it has just announced that the 2011 Audi A8 will be available with factory-installed in-car wireless hotspot.

The WLAN hotspot is located within the rooftop antenna, and passengers can connect to the internet via any laptop, netbook or new-age tablet, like the Apple iPad. Audi says that the network is capable of speeds up to 7.2 Mbit/sec and that WAP2 encryption is on hand in order to securely transfer data. Audi claims that this is the first such factory-installed system, although other automakers offer WiFi connectivity with dealer installed accessories.

First Look: 2011 Audi R8 GT

These days, it’s seemingly a requirement for any supercar worth its Y-rated rubber to have a limited-edition evil twin. Names like Scuderia, Superleggera, GT3 RS, and ACR-X are all testament to the current demand for no-nonsense road monsters, sacrificing comfort and practicality for purpose and sheer speed. Audi’s R8 was billed as an everyday supercar when it was released, and the addition of a V-10 in the latest example hasn’t done anything to change that impression. But such a reputation is a double-edged sword, with some dismissing the mid-engined Audi as too soft, or without soul.

Fewer people will be saying that about the Audi R8 GT, but mind you, this is still no anorexic skin-and-Kate Moss. Consider that Audi’s quattro all-wheel drive system is retained, as is the stereo and climate control system. There are no Spartan nylon door pulls or bare aluminum floor panels to be found, and the R8 GT retains the majority of its sound insulation. For the most part, the Audi R8 GT‘s diet consists of lighter materials — no easy task when the standard car already boasts an aluminum space frame and magnesium chassis.
