Simraceway launches the VW Baja Race Touareg TDI Trophy Truck

Simraceway launches the VW Race Touareg

Developed by the Volkswagen Design Center in Santa Monica, California, and unveiled at the 2008 LA Auto Show, the Baja Race Touareg TDI Trophy Truck was created to contest the 41st Annual Baja 1000 desert race of 2009.

Despite its name, this purpose-built racer bears only a passing resemblance to the manufacturer’s road-going four-wheel-drive SUV, with its double A-Arm front suspension and four-link rear suspension (which allow a massive 25 and 30 inches of wheel travel respectively), Fox Racing Shocks, Eibach Coils, BFGoodrich Baja KRT off-road tires, and 125-inch wheelbase marking it out as an entirely different animal.

Thanks to its 5.5-liter V12 clean-diesel engine, it also proved to be unique amongst the Baja 1000′s competitors, becoming the first turbodiesel Trophy Truck to compete in the race. However despite its green credentials, the powerplant’s 550 bhp still managed to propel the towering Touareg to a respectable 13th position in the 634-mile race.

Late last year, Tristan Herbert finished 11th in his debut World-Challenge race. Over the weekend he took the Brimtek Motorsports VW GTI to a first ever win in the WC. With a lot of movement throughout the race, Tristan was able to take his 3rd place start to a win over Lawson Aschenbach by almost a second. Gallery after the jump!

“This is the perfect example of why people get involved with local programs in SCCA,” Herbert said. “That’s where I started, with a driver’s school with the [Washington, D.C. Region] and worked my way up. This is exactly why you get into racing, and what you can do with it if you stick to it and work really hard. It’s awesome, it hasn’t even hit me yet.”

At the start, our bud Chip Herr and Herbert quickly overtook Aschenbach, with Tristan moving past Herr by the third lap.

With a caution out, the Brimtek Motorsport team made a costly mistake, went around the pace car and made a full lap up on their competitors. The class was not given the order to move around the pace car.

Officials called Herbert into pits and let him back out after Chip Herr went by.

At first this looked bad but Herbert quickly reeled in Herr by lap 22 and went by. Aschenbach was not done yet, as he was on the move but would end up 2nd, 0.737 off the VW GTI. Herr ended up 13th overall after issues hit the Mazda RX-8. Read more…

Chicago 2011: Volkswagen debuts turbocharged 2012 Jetta GLI, priced from $23,495

When Volkswagen first debuted the new-for-2011 Jetta sedan, we were told that a total of four engine choices would be available. The standard Jetta makes use of the naturally aspirated 2.0- and 2.5-liter mills, as well as the much-loved 2.0-liter TDI powerplant. The final engine in this set – Volkswagen’s turbocharged 2.0-liter four – now makes its debut under the hood of the 2012 Jetta GLI, which gets its official reveal at this week’s Chicago Auto Show.

Think of the Jetta GLI as a bigger, fatter GTI. Just like in the smaller hatchback, the 2.0-liter turbo-four produces 200 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque, mated to either a six-speed manual transmission or VW’s DSG automatic. The Jetta GLI uses the same XDS cross differential system that debuted in the GTI, which assists in controlling wheel spin and understeer during cornering.

The Jetta GLI is available in three trim levels – GLI, GLI Autobahn and GLI Autobahn Navigation – priced from $23,495, $25,545 and $26,445, respectively. The base GLI comes standard with 17-inch alloy wheels, smoked taillights and a revised front fascia, not to mention enhanced suspension geometry for better engagement out on the road. The GLI Autobahn ups the ante with a set of 18-inch alloys, dual-zone climate control, heated leatherette seats and a new Fender premium audio system. The top-trim GLI Autobahn Navigation adds, well, navigation, as well as push-button start.
