GM Fast Idle vs PTO Bulletin

The purpose of this bulletin is to describe the differences between Fast Idle and PTO. The bulletin will answer the following questions:

1. What are Fast Idle and PTO?

2. Fast Idle vs. PTO – How do you choose which feature to use for your application?

3. How do you get it? (Option order, modification and/ or programming requirements).

4. What features are available per engine, platform, and model year?

1. What are Fast Idle and PTO?

Power Take Off (PTO) and Fast Idle both allow for elevated idle speeds to allow the engine to perform a desired task. In the past, engine speed increases were often a simple mechanical adjustment. With the advent of electronic engine controls, engine speed is now controlled by engine electronics. The Engine or Powertrain Control Module must now be used. Various combinations of wiring and programming changes may be required to implement these functions.

Fast Idle is sometimes called High Idle. It can be ordered on some vehicles as RPO UF3. It causes the engine to go to a single elevated speed for increased output from normal accessory drive components. Examples are increased voltage from the alternator or increased cooling from the HVAC compressor. Fast Idle can also take advantage of increased base engine heat output for fast vehicle heating.

PTO’s (Power Take Off’s) are used when hydraulic fluid is needed to do the work. It can be ordered on some vehicles as RPO PTO. The PTO unit itself typically mounts to the transmission or accessory drive. Notes: GM does not sell PTO’s as factory equipment; an up fitter must add them. Accessory Drive mounted PTO’s will invalidate the GM Accessory Drive Warranty.

PTO differs from Fast Idle by offering a greater degree of control. These controls include multiple or variable engine speeds and increased turn on/off logic. PTO has more complex wiring for the Upfitter to install than Fast Idle. Some functionality comes standard from the factory in the PCM. Many of these variables can be changed with a service tool for each customer. These are discussed in the modification and programming sections. PTO also turns off some of the engine diagnostics to allow for the higher loads.

GM to launch special edition Camaro every six months

07 2012 chevrolet camaro zl1 1297695054 445x300 GM to launch special edition Camaro every six months

You think there were a lot of special editions of the Bugatti Veyron? The Europeans ain’t got nothin’ on muscle cars when it comes to low-volume derivatives. And for its part, Chevrolet doesn’t plan on stopping anytime soon. Just the opposite, in fact… at least, that is, according to the latest reports.

Word has it that Chevy is planning on rolling out a new special edition Camaro every six months for – hold on while we take out our trusty old Autoblog abacus – two each year! The new ZL1 that debuted in Chicago is said to be the first in a long line that is expected to be followed by a new Transformers edition for the upcoming sequel Dark of the Moon. After that we should see run of 500 replicas of the Camaro SS Convertible that’s set to pace the Indianapolis 500, and then a limited-edition Camaro Synergy that’ll offer buyers a V6 with all the performance bits you’d expect from the V8.

If the reports prove accurate, that ought to take us through the end of next year. Beyond that, Chevrolet reportedly plans on tapping in to other historic Camaro variants for future specials. Have a thought or two on the subject? Tell us what special Camaro you’d like to see next – you never know who might be listening. Read more…

Pics Aplenty: GMC Sierra All Terrain HD Concept is ready to play dirty

Cars are cool, but we certainly love ourselves some big, bad, hardcore pickups – you know, like the Ford F-150 SVT Raptor. General Motors’ conceptual answer to Ford’s desert-blasting pickup is this, the Sierra All Terrain HD concept, which we’ll be seeing for the first time at the Detroit Auto Show next week.

GMC’s brutish pickup relies on The General’s 6.6-liter Duramax diesel V8 for power – 397 horsepower and 765 pound-feet of torque, to be exact – and higher ground clearance, a wider stance and serious suspension upgrades make the All Terrain concept capable of storming through, well, all types of terrain.

First Drive: 2011 Chevrolet Cruze

Over a year ago, we sampled a Korean-built, Euro-spec Cruze and declared it the car that must save GM. Since then we’ve been bombarded with rhetoric about how THIS global compact will be different, conceived from the start as a world-beater that will sell in the U.S. as an aspirational compact (oxymoron alert!). We’ve been assured the proof of the pudding would be in the tasting, and today the chefs have called us into the kitchen to lick some beaters as the chefs add the final pinches of tuning calibration and dashes of refinement before the Cruze comes out of the oven this September.

On hand for our taste test were two competitive benchmark vehicles, the COTY-winning Honda Civic and the Toyota Corolla (both 1.8-liters), and three 1.4-liter turbo Chevrolet Cruzes: a 2LT (upmarket trim on the chassis setup 70 percent of North American Cruzes will get), the fuel-economy-optimized Eco, and the top-shelf handling-optimized LTZ. Our drive was limited to a six-mile loop of mixed pavement surfaces on GM’s Milford Proving Grounds ride-evaluation loop.

New York 2010 Live: Cadillac CTS-V Sport Wagon is fantasy writ large

The world’s automakers are introducing around 20 new vehicles this week at the 2010 New York Auto Show. Some of those cars are pretty interesting, but here’s the juice: In 20 years, there is exactly one car being shown here today that people will still be whispering about. That car? The Cadillac CTS-V Sport Wagon. You’re reading this correctly. Cadillac, former maker of landau-roofed Boca Rotan retirement sleds will soon be offering a station wagon stuffed with a 556-horsepower, supercharged and Corvette-derived 6.2-liter V8. If that’s not loony enough for you, yes, you can order it with a six-speed manual. Wowza.

We first glimpsed the V Wagon last night at a fairly gala Cadillac cocktail reception, complete with GM design boss Ed Welburn and none other than Maximum Bob Lutz, the man who may have single handedly willed pistonhead fantasy into production. The CTS-V Sport Wagon took center stage flanked on either side by the plain old CTS-V and our Detroit Show favorite CTS-V Coupe. To put the spectacle in photographic terms, even though it was surrounded by some pretty desirable metal, the newest V managed to “pop.”

Cruze Comes To Town: Chevy unveils 40-mpg Eco model and RS package

hevrolet will use the 2010 New York Auto Show to reveal a few more details about the production Cruze sedan going on sale this fall. Specifically, the Big Apple is where Chevy will formally unveil the high-mileage Cruze Eco model and RS trim package (inset). The Chevrolet Cruze Eco is propelled by the new turbocharged 1.4-liter Ecotec inline four-cylinder. This engine, combined with a six-speed manual transmission, is not only the most powerful unit available, it’s also expected to yield a hybrid-like 40 miles per gallon on the highway. In order to help achieve that lofty number, the Cruze Eco gets drag-reducing shutters that close off the lower grille at higher speeds. Also contributing to the car’s elevated fuel efficiency are a deep front air dam and under-body panels. The 1.4 turbo is rated at 138 horsepower and a healthy 148 pound-feet of torque.

Like other Chevy models, the Cruze will also be offered in LS, LT and LTZ trim levels. The LS gets a 136-horsepower naturally-aspirated 1.8-liter four, while the two higher trims get the turbo. Drivers wishing for a sportier appearance can opt for the RS package, which adds foglamps, rocker panel extensions and a rear spoiler. The RS pack also brings an upgraded interior featuring chrome trim and backlit instrument cluster bezels.2011 Chevrolet Cruze eco Read more…
